چکیده

INTRODUCTION: Up to now, Periodically Rotated Overlapping ParallEL Lines with Enhanced Reconstruction (PROPELLER) or BLADE imaging has been applied to reduce motion artifacts mainly in T2-weighted imaging. Using an inversion pulse at the beginning of the sequence results in T1-weighted contrast – this technique has been evaluated for T1-weighted imaging in the brain after application of contrast agent for detection of brain metastases. Contrast-enhanced coronal T1-weighted sequences with spectral fat suppression are an essential part of head and neck MR imaging. But this techniques is extremely susceptible to flow artifacts (neck vessles) and motion artifacts (swallowing) – even in cooperative patients. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate if BLADE imaging might be helpful in a routine clinical setting to improve image quality and diagnostic reliability. Two different approaches to reach T1-weighted contrast in BLADE with spectral fat suppression were tested.

Novel application of T1-weighted BLADE sequences with fat suppression compared to TSE in contrast-enhanced T1-weighted imaging of the neck: cutting-edge images?

PURPOSE To evaluate if the use of BLADE sequences might overcome some limitations of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the extracranial head and neck, which is a diagnostically challenging area with a variety of artifacts and a broad spectrum of potential lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS After informed consent and Institutional Review Board approval, two different BLADE sequences with (BLADE ...

The effect of inversion times on the minimum signal intensity of the contrast agent concentration using inversion recovery t1-weighted fast imaging sequence

Background :Inversion recovery (IR) pulse sequences can generate T1-weighted images with a different range of inversion time (TI) to suppress or null the signal intensity (SI) for a specified tissue. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of TI values on the concentration of the contrast agent, which leads to a minimum signal intensity, using an inversion recovery T1-weighted 3-dim...

Improved detection and delineation of head and neck lesions with fat suppression spin-echo MR imaging.

To compare conventional and fat suppression MR imaging in their ability to detect head and neck lesions, we prospectively studied 17 patients with head and neck tumors and one normal volunteer. Five patients had benign tumors (one mixed cell tumor, one hemangioma, one lipoma, and two plexiform neurofibromas), 10 had malignant tumors (six squamous cell carcinomas, two minor salivary gland carcin...

Improved image contrast and scan efficiency for fat suppressed T1-weighted imaging at 3T with a spin echo two-point Dixon technique

Introduction: Fat suppressed T1-weighted imaging is often an essential component of a clinical MRI exam. Compared to several relatively newer pulse sequences (e.g., spoiled gradient echo, T1FLAIR, FSE), the conventional spin echo (SE) sequence still produces the best T1-contrast and is preferred by many radiologists for certain applications (such as for imaging of head & neck). However, inclusi...

Head and neck paragangliomas: improved tumor detection using contrast-enhanced 3D time-of-flight MR angiography as compared with fat-suppressed MR imaging techniques.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE MR imaging techniques have proved their efficacy in imaging the head and neck region. In this study, we compared T1-weighted, dual T2-weighted, and fat-suppressed MR imaging and unenhanced and contrast-enhanced 3D time-of-flight MR angiography sequences for detection of head and neck paragangliomas. METHODS Thirty-one patients with 70 paragangliomas were examined. Four ...
